Project description 

Smart control systems not only ensure better management and use of rainwater, but also significantly improve the operation of the entire water and sewage network. In the face of severe climate change, they are crucial elements of any modern water protection system. To manage the accumulated rainwater in the reservoir in Rawicz, it was decided to equip it with the BUMERANG SMART system. 


Actions aimed at increasing the retention capacity in Rawicz 

The Rawicz Commune is planning to build a floodplain polder to accommodate the entire water supply from an hour of intense rainfall. Its capacity will be 7,200 m3, and the construction cost is estimated at approx. PLN 1.4 million. 

This is the next stage of the commune’s activities aimed at constructing a modern infrastructure for collecting precipitation. Its first part was the construction of a 550 m3 retention reservoir, which was completed last year on the existing rainwater drainage system, accompanied by the reconstruction of the rainwater drainage system at Kadecka Street. 

The designed rainwater drainage system (with rain inlets, sedimentation chambers, overflow chamber, rainwater reservoir and rainwater pumping stations) is intended to relieve the existing rainwater drainage system and provide drainage of the surrounding areas. 

As the project contractor, Ecol-Unicon has used HYDROZONE BENEFIT modular solution with additional equipment for effective retention, pre-treatment and the use of rainwater and meltwater. The whole system consists of an integrated mineral suspension and water/oil separator and two pumping systems. The first module is used for emptying the reservoir before rainfalls, while the second one supplies the hydrant for fire protection and watering purposes. The reservoir control is supported by the BUMERANG SMART system. 


Technical elements of the projects 

The rainwater drainage network is made of solid PVC pipes and connected to the designed underground rainwater retention tank. It is equipped with prefabricated, concrete inspection chambers with monolithic bottoms and appropriately shaped base units. The chambers are covered with ventilated, concrete-filled hatches. 

A new overflow chamber was constructed as part of the reconstruction of the existing rainwater sewerage for storm overflow, relieving the existing egg-shaped channel. The basic element working with the designed channel is the overflow valve, which can smoothly change the height of the overflow edge and determine the amount of rainwater inflow to the designed channel and further to the retention reservoir. 


Using the HYDROZONE BENEFIT retention reservoir 

A prefabricated reinforced concrete retention reservoir was used in the project, consisting of flat closing modules, an extension module, internal supports and covers. 

The reservoir features the following pre-treatment chambers: the centrifugal chamber for separating mineral suspension, the chamber of lamella oil/water separator and the retention and pump chamber. They effectively separate suspensions and petroleum substances from rainwater flowing in the rainwater drainage system before being used for watering greenery. 

Some of the covers feature manhole chimneys, topped with a manhole; in two of the chimneys there is a modular ladder with a retractable stainless steel handrail. The water storage chamber is also ventilated with stainless steel ventilation chimneys. 


Two pumping systems in the retention reservoir in Rawicz 

There are two independent pumping systems in the reservoir. One two-pump system empties the reservoir by pumping water into the rainwater drainage system, while the other is used for filling water tankers or fire engine tanks. Submersible pumps are used, with the capacity of 10 dm3/s. The pumping stations are supplied with electricity from the existing electrical system. 

The pumping systems are controlled from the switchgear located at the reservoir. A hydrostatic probe and two floats are installed in the tank: one indicates the minimum level and the other alerts when the maximum water level in the reservoir is reached. In addition, the measurement of the water level in the well is possible by using an ultrasonic probe. 

Thanks to the installed pressure transducer, the second pump system maintains a constant pressure in the hydrant, and the pump can operate with full efficiency when the hydrant is open. 

The reservoir with pumping stations is connected to the BUMERANG SMART monitoring and management system, and the pump control and status view are provided via GSM. Moreover, an emergency overflow was designed for the cases when it is impossible to receive water, i.e. the reservoir is overfilled, the emptying system has failed or there is a service interruption. 


BUMERANG SMART – benefits 

  • The benefits of using the BUMERANG SMART control and monitoring system in this type of projects include an increased efficiency of management of the water accumulated in retention reservoirs, meaning the reduction of lost retention and the use of in situ water. It is also a way to lower the operating costs and increase safety. 
  • Its major advantage is also the ability to download data from weather websites and local rain gauges. The system allows you to collect real measurement data for the preparation or optimisation of a hydrodynamic model for rainwater drainage systems. 
  • The system shows on an ongoing basis the current status of monitored facilities and generates relevant alerts and automatically starts the necessary processes in the case of undesirable events. 
  • It is certainly worth considering the installation of the system for other projects involving water retention reservoirs. Especially since a certain advantage of BUMERANG SMART is its ability to work not only with Ecol-Unicon devices, but also with other facilities of rainwater and sanitary sewage systems.

Implementation of Bumerang SMART for the pumping station in Rybnik

Project description 

The smart monitoring and management system for the water and sewage systems is not only an opportunity to significantly reduce lost retention, but also a great convenience, safety and lower operating costs. One of such solutions is Bumerang SMART, used for controlling the operation of nine pumping stations in Rybnik, installed as part of the construction of a new road. 


Objectives of the project in Rybnik 

The purpose of the project was to build a regional Racibórz-Pszczyna road and a downtown road on the section between the downtown junction to the intersection with Obwiednia Południowa Street in Rybnik. The entire project was financed by the EU from the European Regional Development Fund under RPO WSL 2014–2020, own funds, funds of the European Investment Bank, and a special-purpose subsidy from Żory. 

The undertaking involved the construction of a new surface of two two-lane roadways with verge and a hard shoulder, and the construction of road junctions and intersections, overpasses and bridges. The existing roads also undergone a major reconstruction. 


Water-related challenges during the project in Rybnik  

We should note, however, that the Rybnik area is located in the basin of the Oder River. The Ruda River flows from the south-east to the north-west and shapes mainly the layout of surface waters and the first aquifer in the city. The left-bank tributaries of the Oder, such as the Gzel, Nacyna, Boguszowicki and Kłokociński brooks, receive waters in the southern part of Rybnik. 

Hence, during the works it was necessary to drain a considerable amount of rainwater from the newly formed sealed areas, and therefore to build as many as nine rainwater pumping stations. Ecol-Unicon’s BUMERANG SMART control system was used to support their day-to-day operation. 


Using the HYDROZONE BENEFIT retention reservoir 

All the works consisted of five stages:  

  • I – road section in the town of Żory – from the built roundabout to the border of Żory and Rybnik 
  • II – road section from the border of Żory to the Gotartowice junction
  • III – section from the Gotartowice junction to the Chwałowice junction
  • IV – road from the Chwałowice junction to the Wodzisławski junction
  • V – section from the Wodzisławski junction to the intersection with Sportowa Street with the intersection.

Separate design documentation was prepared and the necessary decisions were obtained for each stage for the purposes of the project. 

The works involved the construction of a rainwater drainage network, in particular: 

  • construction of a system of drainage ditches along with installation of pre-treatment devices, 
  • construction of catch basins and elements supplying water to pre-treatment devices and the receiver, 
  • construction of street gullies, reinforced concrete manholes, one-sided inlets in ditches, elements of slope outlets, house drain outlets and concrete outlets on the banks of watercourses, ditches and rivers. 


Technical aspects of the project in Rybnik  

Before bringing rainwater into natural watercourses, pre-treatment devices were installed, including sedimentation tanks and oil/water separators. 

The construction of prefabricated concrete outlets to ditches or watercourses was planned on sections of the rainwater drainage system, and the Kłokocinka River receives water from the rainwater drainage system. Rainwater from the surface of roads and pavements is now collected by rain inlets with settling tanks that stop sand, leaves and other fractions of suspended matter. Rainwater and snowmelt is then discharged from road gullies to road ditches through house drains with an outlet on the slope of the ditch with paving or through the use of slope sewage. 

Coarser fractions and larger solid pollutants in rainwater flowing by roadside ditches are stopped before the inlet to the catch basin in the settlement section at the very ditch and on the basin grate, and then in the settlement section of the catch basin. 

The designed sewage system was laid in the ground along its entire length. The pipes were placed in a trench with removed debris, concrete and stones, while sandy soil or sand was used to backfill the trench. 

Highway sedimentation tanks with a float closure at the outflow were used to protect the natural environment against the flow of pollutants, to reduce the total suspended solids in rainwater discharged to the reservoir. To reduce the concentration of pollutants, lamella separators were designed to work with sedimentation tanks. 


Integration of Bumerang SMART with the project in Rybnik 

Measuring devices and remotely controlled actuators were placed on the installed pumping systems, while the collected data are transmitted via the GSM network to the monitoring system. This makes it possible to monitor the operation of devices on an ongoing basis and to quickly respond and start the necessary processes in the case of undesirable events. 

Data from Bumerang SMART monitoring not only provide great support for the ongoing control, but may also be used in long-term development plans for operating activities. 


Bumerang SMART and pumping station control   

Smart monitoring of the pumping station minimises the need for direct control of facilities and accurate scheduling of maintenance. 

Bumerang SMART operates in the SaaS (Software as a Service) model, guaranteeing data security and lower maintenance costs. It also relieves the operator of the obligation to install software, to have a constantly working computer with Internet access and to remember about the telemetry subscription of the monitored facilities. The system gives an easy access to new functionalities and ensures regular updates.

Installation of the intelligent BUMERANG retention management system in Rzeszów

Project description 

For years, remote monitoring systems have been indispensable for various industries and local economy. They not only enable instant data collection and control of devices in remote locations, but also ensure safety and allow you to save time and money. An example of such solutions is the BUMERANG SMART system for monitoring and management of water and sewage systems, which has been recently installed in the Budziwój Estate in Rzeszów. 


Troubling flooding in the Budziwój Estate 

In 2010 the town of Budziwój was affected by a huge flood. In the same year, the town was incorporated into Rzeszów, and the resulting area of 17.5 km2 (as much as 14% of the entire city) is currently the largest housing estate in the capital of Podkarpacie. At that time, the mayor announced that to prevent further floods and inundations, a modern sewage system would be built in the estate area for drainage and management of rainwater. 

The construction of the rainwater drainage system for roads and areas in the estate is one of the essential municipal projects and an extremely important undertaking, also because of using an innovative solution – a retention sewer. Unfortunately, as a result of the development and the formation of impermeable surfaces that restricted and prevented natural water retention, the estate would still suffer from troublesome flooding. 

Therefore, the City Hall decided to comprehensively modernise the sewage system and support it with the BUMERANG SMART solution, thanks to which it will be possible to intelligently maximise the volume of rainwater held in retention reservoirs and collectors, while the collected water will be usable for municipal purposes. 


Project implementation and basic technical aspects 

The entire system consists of six sets of reservoirs with an area of 1720 m3, an automatic valve system with a drive and radar-based water level measurement, an automatic system of motorised valves, an oil/water separator, a hydrant supply pump system, water quality and conductivity meters and water level sensors in tanks. 

However, the starting point for designing a smart management system and the use of rainwater was mainly the development of a local rainfall model, local hyetographs and computer hydrodynamic modelsEcol-Unicon Sp. z o.o. prepared full design documentation, and then obtained the necessary permits for the purposes of the contract. After delivering and installing the software with the necessary devices, construction works began to convert the reservoir. 


Grey water pre-treatment facility in the sewage system of Rzeszów 

The pre-treatment facility is a very important element of the entire project. It is an underground system with a maximum capacity of 30 dm3/s, whose purpose is the highly effective separation of suspended solids and petroleum derivatives from rainwater flowing in the rainwater drainage system. Water treated in this way can then be used for municipal purposes. 

The body of the pre-treatment device consists of four chambers: the centrifugal chamber for separating mineral suspension, the chamber for stopping flotation impurities, the lamella oil/water separator chamber and the retention and pump chamber. 

  • The first chamber separates the suspended matter easily falling from the rainwater that flows from the reservoir. Thanks to the deflector placed at the inlet, it is possible to bring sewage tangentially to the reservoir side, which forces the rotating movement of sewage. The design is designed for using (apart from the force of gravity) the centrifugal force, so that despite the small surface, you can obtain high efficiency of suspension separation at high hydraulic loads. 
  • The second chamber stops contaminants floating on the water surface. 
  • Wastewater is immediately taken to the lamella separator chamber, where the flotation process separates light pollutants, meaning fluids with density lower than water, such as: gasoline, diesel oil, heating oil and other oils of mineral origin. Importantly, the lamella sections are removable and equipped with cords for pulling them out of the separator and cleaning. They can be reused after cleaning. 
  • Finally, the retention and pumping chamber stores the treated wastewater. The chamber features a submersible pump with a coupling elbow and guides. 
  • An additional advantage of the system is that cleaning and inspections do not require the service staff to enter the body since their tasks can be done from the ground level. 


BUMERANG SMART in the Budziwój Estate in Rzeszów – key benefits 

Measurement devices installed in the rainwater drainage system facilities make it possible to collect the monitoring data and transfer them to the user via a GSM network. The system analyses the status of facilities on an ongoing basis and uses the implemented algorithms to automatically start the appropriate system processes. In addition, it shows the current status of monitored facilities and generates relevant alerts in the case of undesirable events. 

At the same time, real-time data are downloaded from weather websites and local rain gauges for more effective management of facilities and rainwater. BUMERANG SMART allows you to collect real measurement data for the preparation or optimisation of a hydrodynamic model for rainwater drainage systems. 

The project commissioned in November 2020 in the Budziwój Estate in Rzeszów will therefore not only optimise the operation of retention reservoirs and prevent floods and inundations. Thanks to the BUEMRANG Smart management and monitoring system, it will be possible to better control the weather conditions and utilise rainwater more effectively. This type of software is a great support for large water and sewage systems.
